26 Killed as Heavy Rains Trigger Devastating Floods Across Parts of India

At least 26 people have lost their lives after days of torrential rainfall caused severe flooding in India's northeastern state of Assam, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

According to state authorities, 21 of the deaths occurred on Tuesday as floodwaters swept through several communities, raising the week's death toll to 26. The overflowing Brahmaputra River, one of Asia's largest rivers, has risen above danger levels in several locations, worsening the disaster.

The heavy rains also disrupted transportation in other parts of the country. The Jammu-Srinagar highway was closed following multiple landslides, while the annual Kedarnath pilgrimage was temporarily suspended in some areas after rocks and boulders fell onto the route. Pilgrims were safely moved to secure locations.

India's weather agency has warned that more heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds are expected across Assam, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir. Authorities in Himachal Pradesh have also issued alerts over the risk of flash floods and further flooding.

Emergency teams remain on high alert as rescue and relief efforts continue in the affected regions.
