One person has been killed and at least 16 others injured after a car crashed into a crowd attending a Pride parade in Berlin, prompting authorities to cancel the remainder of the LGBTQ event.
According to German police, the incident occurred on Saturday night near Tiergarten Park, close to the route of the Christopher Street Day (CSD) parade. A white car reportedly struck several pedestrians before crashing into a tree.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene to treat the injured, with some victims reported to be in critical condition. Police immediately cleared the area and urged attendees to leave the event for their safety.
Investigators later identified a male suspect known to authorities and believed to have links to Islamist circles in Berlin. However, police said he had not yet been arrested and stressed that the motive behind the attack remains under investigation.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz condemned the incident, promising that those responsible would be brought to justice. Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner described the attack as "an assault on a free and open society."
More than 2,200 police officers had been deployed to secure the Pride celebrations, which had attracted hundreds of thousands of participants from across Germany and beyond.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deadly incident.
