A Czech Army helicopter carrying five soldiers crashed at a military base in the eastern part of the country on Thursday, leaving one soldier dead and several others injured.
According to the Czech military, the accident occurred at the 22nd Helicopter Air Force Base in Namest nad Oslavou, about 180 kilometres southeast of Prague. Emergency responders rushed to the scene following the crash.
Three soldiers with moderate injuries were taken to a hospital in Brno, while another with minor injuries was treated at a hospital in Jihlava. Several other people who inhaled smoke were also taken to hospital for medical evaluation.
The helicopter involved was identified as a UH-1Y Venom, a multi-purpose military aircraft used by the Czech Armed Forces.
In response to the incident, the Czech Army announced the temporary suspension of all H-1 helicopter operations pending the outcome of an official investigation into the cause of the crash.
Military officials expressed condolences to the family of the deceased soldier and said support is being provided to both the bereaved family and the injured personnel. An investigation is now underway to determine what led to the fatal accident.
