Troops of the Joint Task Force North West, under Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have rescued 48 kidnapped residents after repelling a terrorist attack on Magami village in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by the operation's spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, the rescue mission was launched after security forces received an emergency report that heavily armed terrorists had invaded the community in the early hours of Saturday.
The military said the attackers, who arrived on about 40 motorcycles, rounded up dozens of villagers and attempted to take them into the surrounding forest while another group guarded the motorcycles outside the village.
Troops responded swiftly, engaging the terrorists in a fierce gun battle. The attackers were forced to flee, abandoning all 48 abducted victims, who were successfully rescued without being taken into the bush.
However, the military confirmed that one civilian was killed during the attack, while two others sustained gunshot injuries. The injured victims were evacuated to the General Hospital in Kaura Namoda, where they are receiving treatment.
Following the operation, troops carried out aggressive patrols across the area to prevent further attacks and track down the fleeing terrorists.
The Theatre Command praised the troops for their bravery and professionalism, reaffirming the military's commitment to protecting lives and restoring peace across Nigeria's North-West. It also urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies to strengthen ongoing counter-terrorism operations.
Zamfara remains one of the states hardest hit by banditry and mass kidnappings, despite intensified military offensives aimed at dismantling criminal networks operating across the region.
