The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has claimed nearly 1,000 lives, making it one of the fastest-spreading Ebola epidemics ever recorded.
According to the DRC Ministry of Health, 999 people have died since the outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain of the virus was declared in May. The World Health Organization (WHO) also confirmed two Ebola-related deaths in neighboring Uganda linked to the same outbreak.
Health officials reported that 2,473 confirmed cases had been recorded as of July 20, with at least 737 patients currently receiving treatment or being isolated in hospitals.
The outbreak began in the northeastern province of Ituri before spreading to other parts of the country. Several cross-border infections have also been detected in Uganda.
WHO officials warned that the current outbreak is spreading faster than any previous Ebola outbreak, surpassing the pace of the devastating 2013–2016 epidemic, which took eight months to reach 1,000 deaths.
The Bundibugyo strain currently has no approved vaccine or specific treatment, making containment efforts more difficult. Health experts say the virus spreads through close contact with infected people or contaminated bodily fluids.
Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) Director-General Jean Kaseya urged the international community to act quickly.
> "We must act now. If we do not stop it today, this could become the worst Ebola outbreak ever documented," he said.
Meanwhile, Uganda has discharged its last Ebola patient and is observing the required 42-day monitoring period before it can officially be declared Ebola-free. However, the United States has maintained travel restrictions for people recently arriving from the DRC and some neighboring countries.
Health authorities continue to call for increased international support, funding, and medical resources to contain the outbreak and prevent further loss of life.
