A United States federal judge has scheduled the trial of former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, for June 1, 2027, following their appearance in a New York court on Wednesday.
Maduro and Flores pleaded not guilty to multiple drug trafficking charges, including conspiracy to import cocaine and "narco-terrorism." Neither defendant addressed the court during the brief hearing.
Their lawyer, Barry Pollack, said the defence will challenge the legality of the U.S. military operation that brought the couple to the United States. He also plans to argue that Maduro is protected by sovereign immunity, which could potentially lead to the dismissal of the case.
The U.S. government alleges that Maduro was involved in an international cocaine trafficking conspiracy while serving as Venezuela's president. If convicted, he could face life imprisonment.
The case follows a controversial U.S. military operation in Venezuela in January 2026 that resulted in Maduro's capture. The operation has drawn criticism from some international legal experts and Venezuelan officials, who have questioned its legality.
The next major court proceedings are expected ahead of the trial, which is scheduled to begin in June 2027.
