The Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, has raised concerns over the agency's severe manpower shortage, saying its current workforce is insufficient to effectively regulate food, drugs, and other products consumed by Nigeria's growing population.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Thursday, Adeyeye disclosed that NAFDAC has only about 2,000 employees serving a population of more than 240 million people.
She compared Nigeria's situation with Indonesia, which has a population of about 280 million but employs around 20,000 regulatory staff.
According to her, while NAFDAC is not requesting a workforce as large as Indonesia's, the agency urgently needs at least 5,000 additional personnel to strengthen its operations across the country.
Adeyeye explained that the shortage has overstretched the agency, making it difficult to maintain an effective presence nationwide despite its critical regulatory responsibilities.
The NAFDAC boss also called for increased funding for the Federal Task Force established to support the agency's enforcement activities. She noted that although the Federal Task Force C34 Bill was enacted in 2004, it has never received dedicated funding.
She expressed optimism that the Federal Government would address the agency's staffing and funding challenges following discussions with the Minister of Finance.
Adeyeye added that the Federal Task Force works alongside task forces in all 36 states to improve enforcement and ensure the safety of food, medicines, and other regulated products across Nigeria.
