Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has approved free healthcare services for all retired state and local government workers across the state as part of efforts to improve access to medical care for senior citizens.
The Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency, Dr. Babagana Tijjani, disclosed the development in an interview, stating that the enrollment of about 20,000 retirees has already commenced across the state's 17 local government areas.
According to him, the initiative is part of the governor's social welfare programme aimed at supporting vulnerable groups by ensuring retirees receive medical treatment without paying any fees.
Dr. Tijjani also revealed that over the past seven years, the state has enrolled about 45,000 civil servants into its formal sector health insurance scheme. Under the programme, workers contribute 1.75 percent of their salaries, while the state government pays an additional 3.25 percent.
He explained that although around 45,000 workers have been enrolled, the active number currently reflected on the agency's dashboard stands at about 35,000 due to retirements, deaths, and exits from the civil service.
He acknowledged that the growing number of beneficiaries has placed pressure on healthcare providers but assured that the government is taking steps to strengthen healthcare facilities and improve service delivery across the state.
