Iran has summoned France's ambassador to Tehran, accusing French diplomats of interfering in the country's internal affairs after two French embassy officials were briefly detained earlier this month.
Speaking during a weekly press briefing on Monday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said the French ambassador was called to the Foreign Ministry and informed that France must stop what Iran described as interference in its domestic affairs under the guise of engaging with civil society.
Baqaei alleged that the two French diplomats had violated diplomatic norms by involving themselves in Iran's internal matters. He also claimed that their actions were inconsistent with the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which governs the conduct of diplomats.
The dispute follows an incident on July 19, when the two French diplomats were reportedly detained by Iranian security officials. According to French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, the diplomats were held for several hours without explanation, questioned by authorities, and one of them was physically assaulted before both were released and allowed to return to the French Embassy in Tehran.
France condemned the incident as an act of intimidation against its diplomatic personnel, while Iran has defended its actions and accused the diplomats of overstepping their diplomatic responsibilities.
The latest development adds to growing diplomatic tensions between Tehran and Paris amid already strained relations over regional security and human rights issues.
