The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rejected allegations by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar that it granted the rival faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), led by Nafiu Gombe, access to its candidate nomination portal.
A senior INEC official, who spoke anonymously, said the commission only recognises the National Executive Committee headed by former Senate President David Mark and denied issuing any access codes to Gombe or his associates.
The official stated that INEC operates strictly under the Constitution, the Electoral Act, and its electoral guidelines, insisting that only the recognised leadership of the ADC can access the nomination portal.
According to the commission, David Mark is officially recognised as the party's National Chairman, while former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola serves as the National Secretary.
INEC also dismissed allegations that its Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, was interfering in the internal affairs of opposition parties or working to weaken them ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The commission described Atiku's accusations as "baseless," stressing that Amupitan had no involvement in the leadership dispute within the ADC and had not participated in any legal action concerning the party.
The controversy followed claims by Atiku's media office that Gombe's faction had uploaded the names of ADC candidates to INEC's nomination portal, an allegation the commission firmly denied.
The ADC leadership under David Mark also rejected the claims, maintaining that only its recognised executives have legitimate dealings with INEC. The party has called on the electoral commission to investigate what it described as the alleged forgery and unauthorised use of documents purportedly linked to the commission.
The dispute comes amid an ongoing leadership crisis within the ADC as political parties begin positioning themselves ahead of Nigeria's 2027 general elections.
