Gunmen have killed Letam Kine, a former Chief Security Officer of Bori, the headquarters of Khana Local Government Area in Rivers State.
The attack occurred on Sunday evening along Polytechnic Road in Bori. Witnesses said the assailants opened fire on Kine before fleeing into nearby bushes. Residents suspect the attackers were members of a cult group.
The shooting caused panic across the area as residents, traders, and students ran for safety. Business activities were temporarily suspended, with many shop owners closing their stores immediately after the gunshots.
An eyewitness said normal activities resumed on Monday, but fear remains high among residents, particularly students of Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic, located in Bori.
Reacting to the incident, Khana Local Government Chairman, Dr. Thomas Bariere, condemned the killing, describing it as a senseless act of violence. He noted that the incident came only weeks after another fatal attack in a nearby community and warned that criminal gangs were threatening the peace of the area.
Bariere called on security agencies to intensify operations, conduct a thorough investigation, arrest those responsible, and ensure they are prosecuted.
The Rivers State Police Command confirmed the incident. Police spokesperson, Superintendent Blessing Agabe, said the victim's body had been deposited in a morgue, while security patrols had been strengthened in the area.
She added that investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest the perpetrators.
