Massive wildfires continued to rage across parts of France and Spain on Monday, with flames advancing toward the French city of Bordeaux and forcing hundreds of thousands of people from their homes.
French authorities said the fires, which began near the Atlantic coast last week, are now about 15 kilometres from Bordeaux's metropolitan area. Around 220,000 people have been evacuated as firefighters race to contain the fast-moving blazes before another heatwave arrives later this week.
In neighbouring Spain, emergency crews are also battling several major wildfires in the provinces of Madrid, Avila, Toledo and Castellon. Officials said more than 75,000 residents have been evacuated, while another 30,000 have been instructed to remain indoors for safety.
Spain's Environment Ministry reported that the Avila wildfire has destroyed more than 50,000 hectares of land, making it the country's largest wildfire in recent history. Another blaze in Castellon has burned over 6,500 hectares.
The fires are taking a heavy toll on local economies, particularly in France's Bordeaux region, which is renowned for its wine production and tourism industry. French officials described the disaster as a major setback for the area.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced that his government will declare a civil protection emergency for the affected central provinces, unlocking additional financial support for recovery efforts.
European countries have joined the response, with Greece and Italy sending firefighting aircraft to Spain, while Portugal has deployed military personnel and equipment. Additional firefighting planes from Turkey are also expected to assist.
Weather officials have warned that temperatures in the Bordeaux region could climb to 37°C later this week, raising fears that the wildfires may intensify if they are not brought under control quickly.
