FG Plans to Replace NYSC Khaki Uniform with Adire Fabric

The Federal Government has announced plans to replace the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) traditional khaki uniform with locally produced Adire fabric as part of a broad reform of the scheme.

Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, disclosed the plan during an interview on Channels Television's The Morning Brief on Thursday. He said the move is aimed at promoting Nigerian-made products and boosting the local textile industry.

According to the minister, Adire fabrics produced in states such as Ogun and Kwara will be used, ensuring government spending supports local manufacturers instead of foreign suppliers.

Olawande also revealed that under the new reforms, corps members will be deployed based on their academic qualifications and professional skills. For example, education graduates will be posted to schools, while other graduates will be assigned to sectors that match their fields of study.

To improve security, the government is also considering posting corps members to regions where they studied or are familiar with the environment, while allowing volunteers who wish to serve in other parts of the country to do so.

The minister dismissed reports that the military would be removed from the NYSC, clarifying that while the scheme's operational leadership will be headed by a civilian, the military will continue to provide security support for corps members nationwide.

The reforms follow the Federal Executive Council's approval of a comprehensive overhaul of the NYSC, marking the first major restructuring of the scheme since it was established in 1973. The government has directed the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Ministry of Youth Development to amend the NYSC Act to accommodate the changes.
