President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the launch of a training programme for 5,000 young Nigerians to become electricity meter installers and technicians under the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI).
The President disclosed this in a statement posted on his verified X account on Thursday, saying the initiative, tagged "The Power Force," is part of his administration's Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at creating jobs, closing Nigeria's metering gap, and improving electricity supply.
According to Tinubu, the programme will provide participants with practical technical skills and connect them to employment opportunities in the country's power sector.
He said the Presidential Metering Initiative was established to eliminate estimated billing, protect electricity consumers, and strengthen Nigeria's electricity market.
Tinubu explained that the programme is open to eligible Nigerians who have completed secondary school, with a dedicated quota reserved for members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
The President noted that expanding electricity metering would improve transparency and service delivery, allowing households and businesses to pay only for the electricity they actually consume.
He added that improved revenue collection by electricity distribution companies would help reduce losses, maintain infrastructure, expand electricity access, and improve service delivery across the country.
Tinubu said he has directed the Presidential Metering Initiative to work with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN), and other relevant stakeholders to begin implementing the programme within the next 30 days.
He encouraged qualified young Nigerians to apply, saying the initiative would equip them with valuable technical skills, create employment opportunities, and support the government's efforts to end estimated billing and improve electricity access nationwide.
