At least five people were killed and 16 others injured after a bomb exploded inside a busy cafe near the Palace of Justice in central Damascus on Thursday, Syrian authorities said.
Officials said the improvised explosive device (IED) had been placed under a table inside the crowded cafe before detonating. Emergency responders rushed victims to nearby hospitals, with several of the injured reported to be in critical condition.
According to the governor of Damascus, security forces pursued and arrested at least one suspect who attempted to flee the scene shortly after the blast. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine whether additional suspects were involved and whether the attack was linked to any extremist group.
The explosion occurred about 100 metres from the city's main courthouse, a busy area frequented by court workers, visitors and shoppers, contributing to the high number of casualties.
The Damascus governor condemned the attack, describing it as an attempt to undermine Syria's stability as the government works to improve security and rebuild the country. However, officials have not yet confirmed who carried out the bombing or whether it was an act of terrorism.
Security forces sealed off the area, deployed search dogs to check for additional explosives and increased patrols while investigations continue. The incident is one of the deadliest attacks to hit Damascus in recent months.
