Eight Buddhist monks have died and more than 20 other people were injured after an 11-year-old boy allegedly drove his parents' pickup truck into a religious procession in northeastern Thailand.
The tragic incident happened on Thursday in Mukdahan Province, about 600 kilometres from the capital, Bangkok. The monks and lay followers had just begun a 260-kilometre pilgrimage to Ubon Ratchathani Province when the vehicle struck the group walking along the roadside.
According to police, the child took his parents' truck without permission before losing control and crashing into the procession. Five monks died at the scene, while three others later succumbed to their injuries in hospital.
Health officials said four monks remain in critical condition, while several others sustained serious and minor injuries.
Security camera footage reportedly captured the moment the pickup truck ploughed into the single-file procession. One survivor said he and another monk managed to jump clear moments before the collision.
Police have taken the boy into custody and said he will be questioned in the presence of child protection officials. Authorities have also impounded the vehicle for forensic examination and are investigating whether the parents may bear legal responsibility for the incident.
Buddhist monks are highly respected in Thailand and regularly participate in public processions and religious pilgrimages across the country.
