Experts Call for Probe After Gombe Assembly Building Collapse

Construction and engineering experts have called for a comprehensive technical investigation into the collapse of a section of the new Gombe State House of Assembly complex, an incident that killed one worker and injured seven others.

The professionals said an independent structural audit should be conducted to determine the exact cause of the collapse, including whether it resulted from design flaws, poor-quality materials, faulty workmanship, construction methods, or inadequate supervision.

Engineer Suleiman Abba, a member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, urged the public to avoid speculation until experts complete their findings, stressing that structural failures require scientific analysis.

Another engineering professional, Engr. Musa Achindo, said the incident highlights the need for strict compliance with engineering standards, proper project supervision, and quality assurance throughout the construction process.

Architect Mustapha Adamu also called for a multidisciplinary investigation involving architects, engineers, builders, and quantity surveyors, noting that lessons from the incident should be used to improve safety standards and public infrastructure projects across the country.

Meanwhile, the Gombe State Government has ordered an immediate investigation into the collapse. In a statement issued by the Ministry of Works, Housing and Transportation, the government confirmed that eight workers were involved in the accident, with one confirmed dead and seven others receiving medical treatment.

Governor Muhammadu Yahaya expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and directed that all injured workers receive free medical care at government expense. He also ordered the contractor and supervising consultant to submit an incident report within 24 hours, followed by detailed technical findings.

The state government assured residents that appropriate action would be taken based on the outcome of the investigation and reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing safety, quality, and engineering standards on public infrastructure projects.
