Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Nigerians backing the party to remain calm following the Court of Appeal's judgment on the party's state congresses.
In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku dismissed claims that the ruling invalidated the ADC's primary elections ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing such reports as misleading and politically motivated.
According to him, the judgment only addressed the conduct of the party's state congresses and the tenure of its State Executive Committees, not the statutory primary elections conducted to nominate candidates.
Atiku stressed that party congresses and primary elections are separate legal processes governed by different laws and constitutional provisions. He maintained that the court only ruled on matters brought before it and did not pronounce on the validity of the ADC's primaries.
He also announced that the party's legal team has been directed to challenge the judgment at the Supreme Court, expressing confidence that the apex court would provide a final interpretation of the issues.
The former vice president encouraged ADC supporters to remain united and committed to the party's mission, insisting that the opposition's campaign for political change remains on course despite the legal setback.
He reaffirmed the party's determination to continue mobilising supporters across the country, saying the road to the 2027 general elections remains open and that the aspirations of Nigerians for better leadership cannot be derailed by what he described as political propaganda.
