Eight cattle were killed and several others injured after gunmen attacked herders in Yarwe village, Fan District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State on Thursday.
The Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Plateau State, Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, confirmed the incident, describing it as an unprovoked attack. According to him, the gunmen opened fire while herders were grazing their cattle, forcing the herders to flee for safety.
Babayo said the attack threatens the fragile peace that communities in Barkin Ladi have been working to maintain. He called on the Plateau State Government and security agencies to investigate the incident thoroughly, identify those responsible, and ensure they are brought to justice.
He also urged members of the Fulani community to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands while authorities handle the investigation.
Meanwhile, the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) has denied allegations that its members were involved in the attack. In a statement, the group described MACBAN's accusation as premature and lacking credible evidence.
The association noted that the area where the incident reportedly occurred is a designated buffer zone where grazing activities are prohibited. It called on security agencies to conduct an impartial investigation to establish the facts and determine whether any existing directives were violated.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the incident as investigations continue.
