The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has recorded 3,200 confirmed Ebola cases and 1,405 deaths as the outbreak continues to spread across six provinces, according to the country's latest health update.
Health officials said 571 patients have recovered, while 773 others remain in isolation and under close medical supervision. In the last 24 hours alone, authorities confirmed 125 new infections and 51 additional deaths, highlighting the continued spread of the virus.
Ituri Province remains the hardest-hit area, accounting for nearly 89 percent of all confirmed infections. Officials blamed the persistent transmission on population movements, insecurity, artisanal mining activities, and cross-border travel involving Uganda and South Sudan.
The outbreak, declared on May 15, is caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, for which there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment, although experimental vaccines are undergoing clinical evaluation.
Health facilities are also facing increasing pressure. In North Kivu Province, treatment centres are operating beyond capacity, while nationwide occupancy of Ebola treatment centres has reached over 82 percent.
Meanwhile, neighbouring Uganda is nearing Ebola-free status after discharging its last confirmed patient and beginning the mandatory 42-day monitoring period required by the World Health Organization.
In response to the regional outbreak, Nigerian health authorities have stepped up surveillance and emergency preparedness.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has activated its Emergency Operations Centre, strengthened screening at entry points, and identified 21 states and the Federal Capital Territory as being at high risk of Ebola infection. Authorities have urged state governments to reinforce surveillance, isolation facilities, and infection prevention measures.
