The Bauchi State Government has dismissed as false a viral social media claim alleging that Governor Bala Mohammed approved a fixed dowry of ₦1,500 for divorced women.
Speaking to journalists, the Commissioner for Religious Affairs and Societal Reorientation, Muhammad Binni, described the reports circulating on Facebook and TikTok as fabricated and intended to mislead the public.
According to Binni, the state government has never introduced or approved any policy regulating the dowry of divorced or single women. He also rejected claims that the traditional ruler of Zar (Gum Zar) instructed residents to comply with such a policy.
"The Bauchi State Government has never issued any directive or policy concerning the dowry of divorced or single women. The information circulating on social media is fake and designed to deceive the public," he said.
The commissioner urged residents to ignore the viral video and refrain from sharing unverified information capable of causing unnecessary tension and confusion.
He added that Governor Bala Mohammed has consistently respected the religious beliefs, cultural values, and traditions of the people of Bauchi State and would not introduce policies that contradict those values.
Binni also appealed to the public to verify information before sharing it on social media to help protect the state's peace, unity, and reputation.
The clarification followed claims by a social media user alleging that divorced women would have a fixed dowry of ₦1,500, while other categories of women would be subject to additional marriage-related conditions. The Bauchi State Government has categorically denied all such claims.
