The Nigerian Red Cross Society has trained 72 members of Flood Rapid Response Teams across six flood-prone local government areas in Kebbi State to improve emergency preparedness and reduce the impact of flooding.
The two-week training equipped participants with practical skills in flood emergency response, disaster preparedness, and community coordination. Twelve volunteers were selected from each of the six participating local government areas: Shanga, Yauri, Koko/Besse, Argungu, Ngaski, and Bagudo.
Speaking on the initiative, the Red Cross Disaster Management Officer, Nwoacha Ekeoma, said the trainees were also provided with river water gauges to monitor water levels and issue early warning alerts to communities at risk of flooding.
According to Ekeoma, the Rapid Response Teams include officials from the Social Welfare Department, the Federal Fire Service, the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and Red Cross volunteers. She noted that the project is designed to strengthen preparedness and ensure a faster, more coordinated response before, during, and after flood emergencies.
A stakeholders' meeting held in Birnin Kebbi also reviewed and validated strategies to improve flood preparedness while enhancing collaboration between the Nigerian Red Cross, the Kebbi State Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, security agencies, and other partners in tackling the effects of flash floods.
The initiative is expected to strengthen early warning systems and help vulnerable communities better prepare for the 2026 flood season.
