NELFUND Clears June and July Upkeep Backlog, Pays Students ₦40,000

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has begun disbursing June and July 2026 upkeep allowances to eligible beneficiaries under the Federal Government's student loan programme.

The latest payment clears the outstanding backlog for the two months, with students receiving a total of ₦40,000—covering ₦20,000 for June and ₦20,000 for July. The development comes after many beneficiaries received their May upkeep allowance in recent weeks.

Students from universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across Nigeria have confirmed receiving the payments, saying the funds will help cover essential expenses such as feeding, transportation, study materials, and other academic needs.

Many beneficiaries praised President Bola Tinubu for introducing the student loan scheme, saying it has eased financial pressure on students and their families. They also commended NELFUND's Managing Director and CEO, Akintunde Sawyerr, for facilitating the release of the outstanding allowances.

Despite the payments, some students expressed concerns over previous delays, urging NELFUND to maintain a more predictable payment schedule and improve communication whenever disbursements are delayed.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) assured beneficiaries that all outstanding payments would be completed in batches. NANS President Akinteye Afeez said no eligible student would be left behind and appealed to those yet to receive their allowances to remain patient as the payment process continues.

NELFUND said the latest disbursement reflects its commitment to improving the efficiency of the student loan programme and ensuring timely support for eligible Nigerian students.
