Army-allied armed groups in Sudan say they have regained control of the strategically important Orshi Reservoir area in North Darfur after launching an offensive against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
According to the Joint Force, its fighters carried out a surprise attack on Wednesday morning, successfully capturing the reservoir and forcing RSF fighters to withdraw from the area. Videos shared by the group showed its forces stationed at the site following the operation.
The Orshi Reservoir is a vital source of water for communities in Ambro locality, where residents have been struggling with severe water shortages. Control of the reservoir is also considered crucial for humanitarian operations, as the area serves as an important route for civilian movement and the delivery of relief supplies.
The RSF had previously announced on June 15 that it had seized the reservoir during a major offensive. Local sources reported that at least five civilians were killed during the attack, while eight nearby villages were allegedly burned and looted, forcing thousands of residents to flee.
Darfur Governor Minni Arko Minnawi has accused the RSF of committing serious abuses against civilians and has urged the international community and humanitarian agencies to step up efforts to protect those affected by the conflict.
Sudan has remained in conflict since April 2023, when fighting erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF over plans to integrate the paramilitary group into the national military. The war has created one of the world's worst humanitarian crises, leaving tens of thousands dead and millions displaced.
