At least two people were killed and six others injured after Russia launched a fresh missile attack on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, in the early hours of Thursday, according to Ukrainian officials.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the victims included civilians, while a 16-year-old boy was among those wounded. Emergency crews responded to multiple explosions and fires caused by the strikes, which damaged warehouses, non-residential buildings, and other infrastructure across several districts of the city.
The attack came just hours after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen visited Kyiv and announced a new drone production agreement between Ukraine and the European Union.
The partnership is designed to combine Ukraine's battlefield experience with the EU's industrial capacity, enabling both sides to jointly develop and expand drone manufacturing. Von der Leyen said the initiative would strengthen Ukraine's defence capabilities through increased technological cooperation and secure production facilities.
The latest assault adds to a growing wave of attacks in the more than four-year-long Russia-Ukraine war. Ukrainian authorities reported that Russian strikes across the country on Wednesday killed at least 13 people and injured about 50 others, with industrial sites and healthcare facilities among the targets in Odesa and Sumy.
The renewed violence underscores the continued intensity of the conflict despite ongoing international support for Ukraine's defence efforts.
