At least 20 people, mostly Nigerians, have reportedly died after an overloaded boat capsized in Cameroonian territorial waters while travelling from Garoua to Yola, Adamawa State.
The boat, carrying more than 50 passengers along with iron rods and other building materials bound for Dasin in Fufore Local Government Area, reportedly departed late Monday despite warnings from local residents to postpone the journey until daylight.
According to witnesses, the vessel encountered a violent storm during the night, causing it to capsize. Rescue efforts are ongoing, with search teams from both Nigeria and Cameroon working together to recover victims and locate survivors.
Local sources said 18 bodies have so far been recovered and buried in Wuro Boki, Fufore LGA, while several survivors are receiving treatment in hospitals located in border communities on both sides of the Nigeria-Cameroon frontier.
The Adamawa State Police Marine Unit confirmed that the incident occurred outside Nigerian territorial waters, limiting its jurisdiction over the accident.
The tragedy has renewed concerns over the use of overloaded wooden boats for cross-border transportation and trade, a common practice in communities along the Nigeria-Cameroon border. Authorities have also urged state governments to enforce stricter safety measures, including banning unsafe wooden boats to prevent similar disasters.
