UK Seizes Russian Oil Tanker in Major Sanctions Crackdown

British authorities have seized a Russian-linked oil tanker in the English Channel in a landmark operation aimed at enforcing sanctions imposed over Russia’s war in Ukraine.

The vessel, Smyrtos, was intercepted by UK Royal Marines and National Crime Agency officers during a six-hour raid off England’s southern coast. The tanker was reportedly carrying about 700,000 barrels of Russian oil and is suspected of being part of Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” — a network of ships used to bypass Western sanctions.

An Indian national was arrested on suspicion of sanctions-related offences, while the ship’s crew, made up of Georgian and Indian nationals, remains aboard as investigations continue.

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described the operation as a significant blow to Moscow’s ability to finance its military campaign in Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed the move, saying it would help reduce Russia’s oil revenues.

The tanker had departed Russia’s Baltic port of Ust-Luga on June 5 and was bound for Egypt. Following the seizure, several other tankers reportedly altered their routes away from the English Channel.

Analysts say the action is unlikely to halt Russian oil exports entirely but could increase transportation costs and complicate efforts to evade sanctions. Russia has not yet issued an official response to the incident.

The operation marks the first time British forces have boarded and detained a vessel linked to Russia’s shadow fleet under expanded powers introduced earlier this year.
