The traditional ruler of Olayinka community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, Oba Salman Olatunji Aweda, has reportedly died while being held captive by kidnappers.
According to community leaders, the monarch was abducted last month, and efforts were made to secure his release. The kidnappers allegedly demanded ₦21 million, two new motorcycles, and a jerrycan of petrol. Despite reportedly meeting these demands, the monarch remained in captivity until news of his death emerged.
A former member of the Kwara State House of Assembly said information about the monarch’s death came from a victim recently released by the same kidnappers. Community members later confirmed the development through internal reports.
Initially, authorities expressed doubts about the reports. The Commissioner of Police described the information as unverified, while the chairman of Ifelodun Local Government said he had not received any official notification.
However, the Secretary of the Ifelodun Traditional Council, Elder Chief Omisola Amos Olayinka, later confirmed the monarch’s death, saying the community was in mourning. He lamented that despite paying ransom and meeting additional demands, the monarch died in captivity.
Community leaders also revealed that the monarch’s body has not been recovered, as his exact location remains unknown.
The incident highlights ongoing security concerns in rural areas of Kwara State, where kidnapping and banditry continue to threaten residents, farmers, traditional rulers, and travelers despite increased security operations by authorities.
