UAE Declares Public Holiday for Islamic New Year, Creating Long Weekend for Workers

The United Arab Emirates has announced a nationwide public holiday to mark the beginning of the Islamic New Year, granting both public and private sector employees a day off on Monday, June 15.

The holiday commemorates the start of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic, or Hijri, calendar. Authorities confirmed that workers across government institutions and private companies will observe the occasion, providing many residents with an extended weekend.

The announcement was jointly confirmed by the relevant government authorities responsible for public-sector and labor affairs, ensuring the holiday will be observed uniformly throughout the country.

Unlike the major Islamic festivals of Eid Al Fitr and Eid Al Adha, the Islamic New Year is generally marked by reflection and remembrance rather than large public celebrations. The day holds religious significance as it marks the beginning of a new year in the Islamic calendar.

With the holiday falling on a Monday, many employees will benefit from a three-day weekend, offering an opportunity for family gatherings, travel, or personal activities.

The Islamic New Year is one of several official public holidays observed annually in the UAE, reflecting the country's cultural and religious traditions while providing residents with designated periods of rest throughout the year.
