US President Donald Trump has said he has cancelled planned air strikes on Iran after earlier warning that the United States would launch “very hard” attacks later in the day.
Speaking through posts on Truth Social and comments to US media, Trump said the decision followed what he described as high-level negotiations involving Iran and several other countries. He claimed that discussions had reached an advanced stage and that “final points” of a potential agreement had been approved by multiple parties.
Earlier in the day, however, Trump had issued a stark warning, saying the US would strike Iran “very hard tonight” and suggesting possible moves against key Iranian infrastructure, including oil facilities.
Conflicting signals from Washington
Trump’s shifting statements have created confusion over US intentions. At one point, he suggested that a naval blockade targeting Iranian ports would continue until a broader deal was finalised. He also indicated that a formal signing ceremony for an agreement could be announced soon, although no details were provided.
His remarks have not yet been publicly addressed by Iranian officials.
Rising regional tensions
The situation comes amid escalating conflict between the United States and Iran, including recent US strikes on vessels in the Gulf of Oman. Reports indicate that several ships have been disabled as part of efforts linked to enforcing restrictions on Iranian oil exports.
Earlier incidents have also resulted in casualties, including the deaths of sailors from other countries, further increasing international concern.
Kharg Island and oil security concerns
Trump has also repeatedly referenced Kharg Island, a major Iranian oil export hub in the Persian Gulf. He has suggested the US could target or seize the site in the future, raising concerns about the security of global energy supplies.
Analysts say any attempt to seize the island would be highly complex and could significantly escalate the conflict.
Tensions between the US and Iran have intensified in recent weeks, with both sides exchanging strikes and accusations. Iran has warned that continued US military action could lead to a prolonged regional crisis.
Meanwhile, international actors including Qatar, Pakistan, and others have reportedly continued diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions and encourage negotiations.
