At least 15 people were killed and more than 10 others injured after a series of drone strikes hit the Sudanese city of El-Obeid in the Kordofan region, according to local health officials. A rights organization, Emergency Lawyers, reported a higher death toll of 23 people, with 19 others wounded.
The overnight attacks targeted residential neighborhoods, a funeral gathering, a truck transporting food supplies, and locations near military positions. Emergency Lawyers accused the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of carrying out the strikes, although the group has not claimed responsibility, and the allegations could not be independently verified.
The incident is the latest example of the growing use of drones in Sudan’s conflict, which began in April 2023 between the Sudanese military government and the RSF. The attack comes less than a week after another drone strike hit a market in Abu Zaeima, North Kordofan State, killing at least 11 people and injuring dozens.
According to the United Nations, at least 880 civilians were killed in drone attacks across Sudan between January and April this year.
Fighting has intensified in the Kordofan region and Blue Nile State in recent months, especially after the RSF captured the strategic city of El-Fasher in Darfur last October. Kordofan remains a critical battleground linking RSF-controlled territories in Darfur with army-held areas in eastern Sudan.
El-Obeid, an important commercial center and the capital of North Kordofan, has been partially surrounded by RSF forces for several months.
Now in its fourth year, Sudan’s civil war has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced nearly 13 million people, creating what the United Nations describes as the world's largest displacement and hunger crisis.
