At least six suspected bandits were killed after security operatives successfully repelled an attack on Kanoma Town and Gidan Daji Village in Kanoma District of Maru Local Government Area, Zamfara State.
According to the spokesperson of the Zamfara State Police Command, Yazid Abubakar, the attack occurred around 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday when a large group of heavily armed bandits stormed the communities. The attackers reportedly carried sophisticated weapons, including rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), general-purpose machine guns, anti-aircraft guns, and AK-47 rifles.
Following a distress call from residents, a joint security team made up of police tactical operatives from the Maru Division, military personnel attached to Operation Fansar Yamma, members of the Violence Crime Response Unit, and local vigilantes swiftly responded to the scene.
The security forces engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle, forcing them to retreat before they could carry out their planned assault. During the operation, six bandits riding on two motorcycles were killed.
Abubakar stated that several other suspects escaped into nearby forests with suspected gunshot wounds. He added that no casualties were recorded among security personnel or residents during the confrontation.
Security presence in the area has since been strengthened, with continuous patrols aimed at maintaining peace, reassuring residents, and tracking down fleeing criminals.
"The command remains committed to protecting lives and property and urges members of the public to continue providing timely and useful information to security agencies," Abubakar said.
The incident occurred less than 24 hours after another successful security operation in Zamfara State, where a joint security team repelled a bandit attack following a two-hour gun battle along Gadar Manya in Anka Local Government Area.
Authorities have assured residents that efforts are ongoing to eliminate criminal elements and restore lasting security across affected communities.
