Senegal’s National Assembly Speaker, Ousmane Sonko, has been re-elected as leader of the ruling Pan-African Pastef party, reinforcing his influence amid an escalating political dispute with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
The party leadership vote took place on Saturday during a congress in Diamniadio, near the capital, Dakar, where Sonko secured an overwhelming victory.
Sonko and Faye were once close political allies. After Sonko was barred from contesting the 2024 presidential election, he endorsed Faye, who went on to win the presidency. Sonko subsequently served as prime minister in the new administration.
However, relations between the two leaders deteriorated in recent months, culminating in Faye’s decision to dismiss Sonko from the prime ministerial position on May 22.
Following his removal, Sonko quickly returned to the political forefront by winning election as Speaker of the National Assembly, a move widely seen as preserving his influence within Senegal’s political system.
His re-election as head of Pastef further strengthens his position at a time when divisions within the country’s leadership have created uncertainty over the future direction of the governing party and the West African nation.
The growing rivalry between Faye and Sonko has sparked political tensions in Senegal, raising concerns about stability as the government confronts economic challenges and mounting public expectations.
Political observers say the latest development highlights Sonko’s continued popularity within the ruling movement and signals that he remains a key figure in Senegalese politics despite his departure from the prime minister’s office.
