At least 12 people were killed and dozens more wounded in a series of Russian missile, drone, and artillery attacks across Ukraine on Thursday, Ukrainian officials said, as the country marked a day of remembrance for children killed since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.
The deadliest attacks were reported in the eastern Donetsk region, where five people lost their lives and 11 others were injured. Ukrainian police said Russian forces struck seven settlements, damaging dozens of civilian sites, including residential buildings, medical facilities, emergency vehicles, and private property.
In the northeastern Kharkiv region, authorities reported three fatalities and 21 injuries following missile and drone strikes. Additional casualties were recorded in the Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk, and Kherson regions, where local officials said Russian shelling and drone attacks caused further deaths, injuries, and infrastructure damage.
The attacks coincided with Ukraine’s observance of the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said at least 707 Ukrainian children have been killed since the war began, while thousands more have been wounded, displaced, or remain missing.
“This day reminds us of the immense suffering inflicted on the most vulnerable victims of the war — children,” Zelenskyy said in a statement, pledging continued efforts to seek accountability for those responsible.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin signaled that Ukrainian President Zelenskyy would be welcome to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, after Kyiv called for direct talks between the two leaders aimed at ending the conflict.
On the other side of the front, Russian-installed officials in occupied territories reported casualties from Ukrainian drone attacks. Authorities in Russian-controlled areas of Luhansk and Crimea said several people were killed or injured in separate strikes targeting civilian vehicles, transport infrastructure, and buildings.
Russia’s Defense Ministry also claimed its forces had captured the village of Komsomolskoye in Ukraine’s Zaporizhia region, while Putin emphasized the need to strengthen Russia’s air-defense systems following recent Ukrainian drone attacks on targets near St. Petersburg.
The latest exchange of attacks highlights the continuing intensity of the conflict, now in its fifth year, despite periodic calls for negotiations and diplomatic efforts to end the war.
