Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday welcomed Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan to the Kremlin as the two leaders discussed ways to strengthen economic ties, boost trade, and expand investment cooperation between their countries.
Hassan, who is on a three-day official visit to Russia, described the trip as a landmark moment in relations between the two nations during talks held in Moscow.
Putin expressed satisfaction at hosting the Tanzanian leader and emphasized the need to expand bilateral trade and economic partnerships. Trade between Russia and Tanzania currently exceeds $300 million annually, with both countries also collaborating on a long-planned uranium mining project.
The visit comes amid growing efforts to increase commercial engagement between the two countries. Earlier this year, a Russia-Tanzania Business Council was established to promote investment and trade opportunities, while Air Tanzania announced plans to launch direct flights between Dar es Salaam and Moscow before the end of 2026.
Hassan arrived in Russia accompanied by a delegation of government officials and business leaders seeking agreements in sectors including tourism, mining, and commerce.
The visit marks the first official trip to Russia by a Tanzanian president since the late founding leader Julius Nyerere visited the Soviet Union in 1969.
Hassan’s trip also coincides with the 2026 St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, a major international gathering that has attracted thousands of participants from more than 100 countries.
