Powerful 7.8-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Southern Philippines, Triggers Tsunami Alerts

A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the southern coast of the Philippines on Monday, killing at least 12 people, injuring several others, and causing widespread damage to buildings across affected areas.

According to authorities, the offshore quake occurred near Sarangani Province, west of Mindanao Island, prompting tsunami warnings across parts of the Pacific region. Emergency officials in the Philippines and neighboring Indonesia immediately urged residents in coastal communities to evacuate to higher ground as a precaution.

Reports from General Santos City indicated that several structures collapsed following the tremor. Rescue teams were deployed to affected locations as emergency operations continued throughout the day. Videos circulating online showed significant damage to commercial buildings and educational facilities.

Philippine President  ordered the suspension of classes in impacted areas and called on residents to heed evacuation orders.

“Move to higher ground immediately and prioritize your safety,” the president said while addressing the nation.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned that tsunami waves could affect coastlines in the Philippines, Indonesia, Palau, Taiwan, and Papua New Guinea within hours of the quake. Japanese authorities also issued tsunami advisories for portions of the country's Pacific coastline.

A strong aftershock measuring 6.1 magnitude was recorded about two hours after the main earthquake, raising concerns over further structural damage and potential casualties.

The Philippines' disaster management agency said casualty figures and damage assessments were still being verified. Emergency responders continued search-and-rescue efforts in the hardest-hit communities.

Located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, the Philippines experiences frequent seismic activity due to its position on major tectonic fault lines. The latest disaster comes months after a series of powerful earthquakes struck parts of the country, resulting in deaths, injuries, and extensive property damage.

Authorities have advised residents to remain alert for aftershocks and follow official safety instructions as assessments continue.
