The Delta State Police Command has arrested three suspected drug traffickers and recovered a large quantity of prohibited substances during separate intelligence-led operations across the state.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the arrests are part of ongoing efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks and curb criminal activities linked to illicit drug use.
In one operation conducted on June 3, officers of the Special Enquiry Unit intercepted a Mercedes truck at the First Niger Bridge axis while carrying out routine stop-and-search duties. The driver, identified as 47-year-old Obinna Nwosu from Anambra State, reportedly claimed he was transporting plumbing materials.
However, a thorough search of the vehicle uncovered a substantial consignment of controlled drugs concealed within the truck. Recovered items included thousands of sachets of Tramadol, Swinol, Rohypnol, Codeine Phosphate tablets, and MDMA, commonly known as "Molly."
Police said the suspect remains in custody while investigations continue to identify and apprehend other individuals connected to the shipment.
In a separate raid carried out the same day, operatives of the Command Anti-Vice Squad stormed a suspected drug distribution centre in Alegbo Community, Owa-Alero, located in Ika North East Local Government Area.
Two suspects, Henry Edward and Okwudili Kingsley, were arrested during the operation. Preliminary findings suggest the pair were involved in a local drug distribution network operating within the area.
Officers recovered five gallons of a fermented cannabis mixture popularly known as "Monkey Tail," along with other suspected illicit substances.
The suspects and recovered exhibits are currently in police custody pending further investigation.
Reacting to the successful operations, Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, praised the officers for their professionalism and reaffirmed the command's commitment to combating drug trafficking and organized crime.
He warned that illegal drug activities continue to fuel crimes such as cultism, armed robbery, kidnapping, and other violent offences, urging residents to support law enforcement agencies by providing useful information that could help disrupt criminal networks.
The police command also emphasized the importance of community cooperation in maintaining security and tackling the spread of illicit drugs across the state.
