The Oyo State Government has cautioned opposition politicians against politicising the recent kidnapping incident in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.
The State Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, said in a statement issued in Ibadan that recent claims linking casualties within the Amotekun Corps to the Oriire kidnapping were misleading and politically motivated.
He explained that Governor Seyi Makinde had earlier disclosed that about 200 Amotekun personnel have died since the establishment of the corps six years ago. However, he said these deaths were due to various causes, including illness, natural causes, and incidents during security operations—not the recent kidnapping event.
According to him, no Amotekun operative died in the Oriire kidnapping incident. He said only one officer was injured and is currently receiving treatment.
The commissioner accused opposition figures of misrepresenting the governor’s statement to create false impressions linking the deaths to the kidnapping case.
He urged political actors to avoid statements that could worsen tensions or endanger the lives of victims, including kidnapped students and teachers.
Oyelade also stated that the Amotekun Corps in Oyo State remains well-equipped, with over 2,500 personnel, 181 vehicles, and 450 motorcycles, making it one of the strongest regional security outfits in the South-West.
He added that Governor Makinde has consistently called for the creation of state police and improved security tools to tackle rising insecurity in the country.
The government called on residents to continue supporting security agencies in maintaining peace and stability across the state.
