More than one million people filled the streets of Madrid on Sunday as Pope Leo XIV celebrated a large open-air mass during his official visit to Spain, according to organisers.
The Pope travelled through the Spanish capital in the popemobile on the second day of his visit, greeting cheering crowds waving Spanish and Vatican flags. King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia were among those attending the service.
At Plaza de Cibeles, worshippers threw flower petals and shouted messages of support as the Pope arrived. Authorities described the event as one of the largest religious gatherings in recent years in the city.
During his sermon, Pope Leo urged believers to express their faith through acts of service, especially toward the poor and vulnerable. He also warned against treating religion as something outdated, describing it instead as a “living school of faith.”
Security was heavily reinforced across central Madrid due to the scale of the event and the movement of large crowds.
The visit has drawn massive participation since its start, including a prayer vigil on Saturday night that attracted around 500,000 people, many of them young worshippers.
Organisers say total attendance across events has exceeded 1.2 million people.
The Pope is expected to continue his visit with a speech before the Spanish parliament and meetings with victims of clerical abuse. He will also travel to the Canary Islands later in the week with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to honour migrants who died crossing into Europe.
The visit marks the first papal trip to Spain in about 15 years and has drawn international attention due to its political and humanitarian themes.
