The Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, has announced plans to sponsor a bill that would introduce a single six-year term for Nigeria’s president and state governors after the 2027 general elections.
He disclosed this during an interview with journalists in Abuja, saying the proposal would be one of his first legislative initiatives in the incoming 11th National Assembly.
Purpose of the proposal
According to Bamidele, the current two-term system often forces elected officials to spend a significant part of their first term preparing for re-election rather than focusing on governance.
He argued that a single six-year tenure would allow leaders to concentrate fully on delivering results without political distractions.
> “If you know you are there for six years, only one tenure, you put in your best from day one,” he said.
Constitutional change required
The proposed bill would require an amendment to the Nigerian Constitution before it can become law. This means it would need approval from both the National Assembly and state legislatures.
Bamidele acknowledged that the idea may not be widely supported but maintained that lawmakers have the responsibility to propose reforms they believe will improve governance.
Debate on governance reform
He added that laws must evolve with time and societal needs, stressing that legislative systems exist to adapt governance structures when necessary.
The proposal is expected to spark national debate on Nigeria’s democratic structure, especially regarding term limits and political accountability.
