Former Kano State Governor and leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Rabiu Kwankwaso, says he is willing to reconcile with current Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, despite their recent political disagreements.
Kwankwaso said he still has affection for Yusuf, his former political ally, and would not reject him if he chooses to return to their political camp.
Their relationship became strained after Governor Yusuf reportedly left the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), the platform under which he won the 2023 governorship election, and moved closer to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The move sparked criticism among supporters of the Kwankwasiyya movement.
Speaking in an interview aired by BBC Hausa, Kwankwaso said politics naturally involves disagreements and reconciliation.
He said:
Yusuf chose to leave the group on his own
He would welcome anyone who returns after leaving
Political allies can fall out and later reunite
Kwankwaso also argued that Yusuf’s electoral victory in 2023 was largely due to the strength of the Kwankwasiyya movement, which supported his campaign.
He explained that Yusuf was selected as the party’s candidate not because of seniority or education, but to test the political strength of the movement in Kano.
Kwankwaso emphasized that leadership requires forgiveness and tolerance, adding that politicians should be open to differing opinions.
