Borno State Gives ₦8 Million and Food Items to 360 Freed Captives

The Chairman of Gwoza Local Government Area in Borno State, Abba Timta, has confirmed that the state government donated ₦8 million and food items to support 360 people recently freed from Boko Haram captivity.

The victims were among about 416 residents abducted during an attack on Ngoshe in Gwoza LGA on March 4, 2026. Most of the victims were women and children.

Timta said the money and food items were delivered during a visit by Governor Babagana Zulum and would be shared among the survivors.

Payment to Victims

He explained that:

Each of the freed captives will receive about ₦21,000 each

The total donation of ₦8 million will be distributed among them

However, he admitted that the food supplies may not be enough for everyone.

Distribution Plan

Because of the limited supplies, the local council advised survivors to:

Share items among themselves

Use a “trade-by-barter” system for rice and corn distribution

Take turns collecting needed items

Timta also said each woman would receive a mat, and additional relief items would be distributed if more support arrives.

Reports also confirmed that some victims abducted from Askira-Uba LGA and freed alongside others have been returned to their communities after receiving assistance.

Governor Zulum also stated that funds have been released for rebuilding and rehabilitating the affected Ngoshe community, and efforts are ongoing to ensure safe return of residents.
