Popular Islamic cleric, Ahmad Gumi, has reacted to criticisms over his recent visit to Ibadan, Oyo State, insisting that no individual or group has the authority to stop him from travelling to any part of Nigeria.
Gumi dismissed allegations that his visit was linked to any agenda of Islamisation in the South-West or the promotion of northern religious ideology.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, he said his trip to Ibadan was not based on an invitation from any Muslim organisation or individual in the South-West, but in his capacity as a representative of a coalition of northern Islamic scholars.
He added that the backlash reflected growing “Islamophobia” in South-West politics and argued that he was unfairly drawn into local controversies.
“I was in Ibadan not at the invitation of any South-West Muslim individual or group, but as a representative of the Coalition of Northern Muslim Ulama. Can anybody stop me from going anywhere in Nigeria?” he wrote.
His remarks followed recent controversy involving comments linked to abductors in Oyo State, where a kidnapped school principal later denied reports that the kidnappers demanded the introduction of Sharia law or a large ransom. She said the abductors were instead demanding the release of their associates in government custody.
Gumi had visited Ibadan on November 19, 2025, where he spoke at the Southern Nigerian Ulama Summit held at the University of Ibadan and also attended a meeting involving Muslim scholars from across the country.
