Nigeria Lawmakers Summon NSA Ribadu, Military Chiefs Over Rising Insecurity and School Abductions

The House of Representatives has summoned the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, alongside the country’s service chiefs, to appear before lawmakers over the worsening security situation across Nigeria.

The resolution followed a motion presented during plenary on Tuesday, expressing serious concern about the continued wave of killings, kidnappings, banditry, terrorism, and other violent crimes despite repeated assurances from security authorities and the Federal Government.

Lawmakers said the rising insecurity, especially recent school attacks and mass abductions in parts of the country, had become unacceptable and required urgent explanation and action from security leadership.

The summons comes amid public outrage over recent attacks on schools in Oyo and Borno States, where pupils, teachers, and school staff were abducted by armed groups. In some cases, educators were reportedly killed during the attacks, further intensifying calls for stronger protection of schools.

The House noted that despite government promises and security interventions, violent incidents have continued across several regions, raising doubts about the effectiveness of current security strategies.

President Bola Tinubu had previously assured Nigerians that efforts were ongoing to rescue abducted victims and strengthen school protection systems, including improved intelligence gathering and rapid response measures in vulnerable communities.

However, lawmakers argued that the continued attacks show that more decisive action is needed, and they expect the NSA and military chiefs to provide detailed explanations and operational updates when they appear before the National Assembly.

The session is expected to focus on strategies to curb insecurity, protect educational institutions, and secure the release of citizens still held by criminal groups.
