Thousands of Iranians gathered in the capital on Thursday to commemorate the 37th anniversary of the death of Imam Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran and leader of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
The main ceremony was held at Imam Khomeini’s mausoleum in southern Tehran, where participants paid tribute to his political and religious legacy. The event drew pilgrims from across the country, along with government officials and foreign guests.
Religious recitations and memorial programs were held throughout the morning, while a message from Iran’s current leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei, was delivered by Tehran’s interim Friday prayer leader, Mohammad Javad Haj Ali Akbari.
Organizers said this year’s observance was held under the theme of renewing commitment to the principles of the Islamic Revolution and reaffirming support for the country's leadership.
Imam Khomeini died on June 3, 1989, at the age of 86. He is widely recognized for leading the movement that overthrew Iran’s monarchy and established the Islamic Republic. During years of exile in Iraq, Turkey, and France, he continued to guide opposition efforts against the rule of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.
The anniversary coincides with remembrance of the June 1963 uprising, a pivotal moment in Iran’s modern history that followed Imam Khomeini’s opposition to the monarchy and helped lay the groundwork for the revolution that took place more than a decade later.
Commemorative events were also reported in other parts of Iran, with participants honoring Khomeini’s role in shaping the country’s political system and national identity.
