Thousands of protesters have taken to the streets of Albania's capital to oppose a proposed luxury tourism project linked to businessman Jared Kushner, citing environmental concerns and demanding the government halt the development.
The planned project includes high-end resorts and hotels on the island of Sazan and within the protected Vjosa-Narta coastal region, an area known for its rich biodiversity and wildlife habitats.
Environmental Concerns Drive Protests
Demonstrators gathered in Tirana carrying banners reading "Albania Is Not for Sale" and "Cancel the Project," arguing that the development could cause irreversible damage to sensitive ecosystems.
Environmental groups warn that the project threatens wetlands that serve as habitats for flamingos, sea turtles, seals, and numerous bird species.
Activists say the scale of the proposed resort complex could dramatically alter one of Albania's most important natural areas.
Investigation Launched
The controversy has intensified after Albania's anti-corruption and organized crime prosecutors opened an investigation into land ownership transactions connected to the development area.
Authorities are examining how land titles were acquired and transferred before being offered to potential investors.
Clashes and Security Concerns
Earlier demonstrations near the coastal site reportedly led to confrontations between protesters and private security personnel. Several activists were injured during the incidents, prompting authorities to suspend some police officers and revoke licenses held by two private security companies.
The unrest has added to growing public scrutiny of the project.
Government Defends Investment
Prime Minister Edi Rama has strongly defended the development, arguing that Albania must remain attractive to foreign investors and international tourism projects.
Government officials maintain that the investment could bring significant economic benefits, create jobs, and boost the country's tourism industry.
However, critics accuse authorities of prioritizing commercial interests over environmental protection and public consultation.
The proposed development is linked to investment plans previously presented by Jared Kushner's firm, which outlined a major tourism transformation of Sazan Island and nearby coastal areas.
