Kwara North Leaders Allege Over 1,200 Deaths in Rising Bandit Violence, Seek Federal Intervention

Elders and stakeholders in Kwara North Senatorial District have raised alarm over worsening insecurity in the region, alleging that more than 1,200 people have been killed since 2023 due to ongoing banditry and terrorist activities.

The concerns were raised under the Kwara North Development Commission (KNDC), which accused the federal government of failing to effectively curb the violence that has devastated communities across Baruten, Kaiama, Edu, Patigi, and Moro local government areas.

According to the group, hundreds of residents have also been abducted, while many communities have been displaced and forced to abandon farming and other economic activities. They described the situation as a “near-total collapse” of security in the region.

The stakeholders warned that the crisis has turned what was once regarded as the “food basket of Kwara State” into an area struggling with hunger, fear, and economic decline, as farmers can no longer safely access their farmlands.

While acknowledging efforts by the Kwara State Government, the group insisted that primary responsibility for security lies with the federal government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, calling for urgent intervention to restore peace.

They also warned that continued insecurity could affect political support for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 elections, as displaced and affected communities may become increasingly disillusioned.

The group urged the federal government to deploy stronger security measures, protect rural communities, and restore confidence in the region, stressing that peace is essential for both survival and economic recovery.
