Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has granted clemency to 97 inmates at the Kaduna Correctional Centre as part of activities marking Nigeria's 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
The governor announced cash grants for the released inmates and offered them admission into state-owned vocational training institutes to support their reintegration into society.
Speaking during the ceremony, Sani said the decision was made under the constitutional Prerogative of Mercy following recommendations from the state's advisory council after reviewing eligible cases. The exercise included outright pardons, sentence reductions and payment of fines for selected inmates.
He emphasized the importance of rehabilitation and second chances, urging the beneficiaries to embrace lawful and productive lives after their release.
To aid their transition, the Kaduna State Government will provide vocational training opportunities at skills acquisition centres located in Soba, Rigachikun and Samaru-Kataf, helping the former inmates gain practical skills and become self-reliant.
The governor also called on community leaders, religious groups and residents to support the reintegration process, stressing that successful rehabilitation requires collective societal effort.
As part of broader reforms, the state government donated a utility bus, medical equipment and healthcare supplies to the Kaduna State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service to improve operations and inmate welfare.
The clemency initiative formed part of the state's Democracy Day activities, which commemorate the struggle for democratic governance in Nigeria and honour those who contributed to the country's return to civilian rule.
