Israel Launches Retaliatory Strikes on Iran After Missile Attack

Israel has launched airstrikes against military targets in western and central Iran after Tehran fired multiple waves of missiles toward northern Israel, marking the most serious direct confrontation between the two countries since the fragile April ceasefire.

The Israeli military said its air force carried out precision strikes on military facilities linked to Iran's security apparatus. Explosions were reported in Tehran, Isfahan, Tabriz and areas near Karaj, though Iranian authorities said no urban districts in the capital were directly targeted and reported no immediate casualties.

The latest escalation began after Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched missile attacks on northern Israel, describing the operation as the start of a "week of continuous strikes." Israeli air defense systems intercepted most of the incoming missiles, and residents were later allowed to leave bomb shelters.

Tensions had already been rising following Israeli strikes on Hezbollah positions in southern Beirut earlier on Sunday. Iran warned that any further attacks on Lebanon or Iranian interests would trigger a strong response.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump urged restraint and reportedly asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to retaliate. Trump said he feared additional military action could jeopardize ongoing efforts to secure a broader agreement involving Washington, Tehran and Jerusalem.

The renewed conflict has also affected regional security and global markets. Iran suspended incoming flights at Tehran's Imam Khomeini International Airport, while oil prices rose sharply amid concerns about potential disruptions to Middle East energy supplies.

International leaders have called for immediate de-escalation, warning that further military exchanges could push the region into a wider conflict with significant global consequences.
