Iraq: Security Forces Arrest Several Officials in Anti-Corruption Crackdown

Iraqi security forces have arrested several politicians, lawmakers and government officials as part of a major anti-corruption operation in Baghdad.

Security sources said elite forces carried out raids at dawn in the heavily protected Green Zone and other neighbourhoods across the capital.

The arrests reportedly include members of parliament whose legal immunity had been removed, as well as officials linked to corruption investigations.

The operation was allegedly based on information from Adnan al-Jumaili, a former deputy oil minister who was arrested last month over corruption allegations.

Iraq’s new Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi has promised to tackle corruption and poor management that have affected the country for decades.

Authorities recently seized about $86 million in cash allegedly connected to the corruption case.

The Associated Press reported that seven people were arrested, including five members of parliament, with some reportedly linked to the political bloc of former Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani.

The Iraqi government has not yet issued an official statement confirming the identities of those arrested.
